Resident Survey: Positive Views on the Hydrogen and Ammonia Plant Project
In September and October 2024, Flexens conducted a resident survey regarding a planned hydrogen and ammonia production plant and an associated power line in the Kokkola industrial area. The survey aimed to gather insights on the current use of the project area and the surroundings of the power line route, assess the potential impacts on locals, and understand respondents’ views on the project's potential benefits and drawbacks. The survey was carried out by Envineer Oy and involved residents of the area as well as other users of the project site.
Flexens' Plant Project Inspires Hopes for Regional Vitality
According to the survey results, Flexens' hydrogen and ammonia production project is viewed positively overall. Respondents see the project as important for enhancing regional vitality, employment, and national energy self-sufficiency. Although many respondents identified potential downsides, such as impacts on the marine environment, landscape, and traffic, the positive aspects—particularly industrial development and renewable energy opportunities—were emphasized.
“I want to thank everyone who participated in the survey. Resident surveys are a key part of our interaction with the local community, and their results will be taken into account in the project’s further planning. In addition, we have organized resident events at the Ykspihlaja guesthouse—three events so far—and another is already being planned. We will announce the date separately.”
The Power Line Required for the Project Will Be Placed Outside the Plant Area
The project includes a power line planned to be located outside the plant area, primarily along an existing power line route and in connection with street areas. The design of the power line is managed by Kokkolan Energiaverkot Oy.
“The power line is not being designed solely for Flexens. It will ensure reliable electricity distribution for the entire KIP area and support its future development.”
"The proposed placement of the route near residential areas was a concern raised in the survey responses. Issues such as the impact of the power line on the landscape, residential comfort, and safety were highlighted. The responses underscored the need to preserve important local sites as part of the area's planning. This information is invaluable to us, and we will continue engaging residents and working closely with local stakeholders to ensure a vibrant future for Kokkola," Kekolahti concludes.
